A conversation between friends brought together three talented emerging Calgarian artists who wanted to improve their crafts and reignite their creative spirit. They pushed themselves to produce 31 Halloween editorial looks and publish them daily on social media during October.

"Texture, silhouette, and colour. Those are the three things that I like to play with when it comes to costumes in order to bring the character's traits out and tie the whole story,” explained Emilie Gagnon, the team’s stylist.

According to Gagnon, the goal was to come together as a team, learn to work together and push their creativity to produce bigger projects for commercial clients.

mood boards

For each character, the team created a mood board to define the approach they would take with the makeup, garments and lighting. “Creating the mood boards was the part that we actually enjoyed the most for this project. We were just building on each other's inspiration and fine-tuning each look,” said Jarred Bautista, the team’s photographer.

“There were things that inspired us in different ways, from editorials that we'd see online to different kinds of lighting to a piece of a garment that I would find and to a makeup look that Brian was really inspired by. So, we put all of those ideas together and create a schedule,” said Gagnon.

“We were able to practice producing projects together. We would sit down after the shoots and brainstorm what we did well and what we could improve on. And then, we'll try to implement it in the next shoot,” explains Bautista. “Our shoots are getting more and more refined.”

For Bautista, it was important that the clothes would stand out in every picture and that people could see the effort put into the hair and make-up.

“This is a great practice for us in approaching a different project daily. So, it gets us to practice thinking in that mindset,” said Bautista. The team hopes this project will create a portfolio for them that will allow them to approach paying clients in the near future.

“My mission in life is to inspire others, educate, and create a community within the artistic world where we can support each other,” said Bryan Francisco, the team’s make-up artist.
